Dear Neighbor,

Thanks for visiting my website to learn more about my campaign for Portland City Council. Please check the "In The News" tab for updates.

I hope you’ll join the thousands of Portlanders who are supporting my effort to make our neighborhoods more vibrant and affordable, our schools more successful and our environment cleaner and healthier.

Many said it couldn’t be done, but thanks to friends neighbors and hundreds of Portlanders we collected more than 1,600 signatures and $5 contributions to qualify me for Portland’s Voter Owned Election program – in less than two weeks!

As The Oregonian said, “Middaugh underscored the depth of [his] community support…” with “rapid-fire corralling of $5 contributions…” The Portland Mercury said that we “…blew away all previous records.” And, Willamette Week noted that we “were able, with the help of volunteers, to collect hundreds of signatures with stunning speed.”

I’m proud of the grassroots, community driven campaign team we’ve assembled. I’m honored to have the backing of more than 1,600 regular Portlanders. I’m grateful that I can spend my time talking to real people about issues instead of spending time downtown asking for big checks from wealthy contributors and big business.

So who is Jim Middaugh? As Portland City Commissioner Erik Sten's chief of staff, I know how City Hall works.  As a former co-chair of my local neighborhood association, I’m active in the community. I volunteer at Sunnyside K-8 which my two daughters attend (my wife Anna is on the PTA board). And, I’ve worked for years to keep Portland’s environment clean and healthy (I’ve worked, volunteered for and served on the boards of local environmental groups).

I’ve never run for office before and don’t have lots of connections to the big downtown law firms and business interests. But, I do have connections to my neighborhood and regular folks like you. More importantly, I have years of experience helping hundreds of people navigate the city’s various bureaus.

The woman in North Portland who needed help fixing her party line sewer…the man in Southeast who had water in his basement…the gentleman who was concerned about accidents near his home in Southwest…the pregnant teen who needed shelter…I know how to solve problems and my first priority will always be to help you get the services you pay for and deserve.

As Congressman Peter DeFazio said recently, “Jim is an extremely bright, energetic and compassionate person who brings a constituent-oriented approach to public service. He’s a proven consensus builder and problem solver and I know he would be a tremendous asset on the Council.”

I’m proud of that. I’ll stand for and with the people of Portland. I’ll work every day to ensure that you receive the city services you want and need and that people like you become more engaged in the city’s work.
